A Representative Selection

 Euro Youths Bratislava 2007

Gavin Maguire and Mark OFlynn had a busy summer of representative Table Tennis as they played for the Irish teams at The Schools International and then went on to represent Ireland at the European Youth Championships.

At the Schools in Guernsey Mark played on the Under 18 team with Daniel Keenan and they lost in the semi of the team event and Gavin played on the Under 16 team with Paul McCreery and they reached the final where they lost to England.

The team performance at the Euro Youths was a very encouraging one. The Junior boys won 4 matches. Both Mark and Gavin played a significant role in winning some of these matches. Mark won at 2-2 against Lithuania. He was 9-4 down in the fifth and won 11-9 to clinch a very exciting match. Gavin won an exciting encounter 3-1 against the Swiss number 2 at 2-2 in our final play off match to seal a 3-2 win.

However, Keith Knox must be singled out as he had an outstanding Championships winning 9 singles and contributing strongly to the great team spirit with his incredible determination and enthusiasm. I have coached at a few EYCs at this stage and I can confidently say that it was one of best performances I have witnessed from an Irish player at these championships
